Ramon Abad

Bindlestiff Studio is proud to announce:

Sponsored by a California Arts Council - Youth Arts Action grant, Fil Am puppeteer, artist & teacher Ramon Abad will be a Bindlestiff Artist-in-Residence beginning January 2020!

His Residency will focus on developing theater using modern puppetry for children 6-12 years old in our SOMA Pilipinas community & beyond. With this Residency Ramon hopes to plant the seed for future programming at Bindlestiff aimed specifically for children.

For Phase 1 of the Residency, Ramon will conduct auditions to cast a small crew of puppeteers and makers for Bindlestiff’s & SOMA Pilipinas’ first ever children’s shows at the theater January – March 2020.

Having previous puppetry experience is awesome but adults or older teens who can tell a story are also encouraged to apply as a puppeteer!

Sewers, builders, sculptors or makers are welcome to come to the auditions & share their work & experience.

After the auditions, Ramon will then lead a small creative crew to develop & build the children’s show before the end of this year. Be ready to roll up your sleeves & pick up a puppet…or make one!

For Phase 2, Ramon will direct a kids’s show entitled “Family Fun Days” that will run as one Saturday afternoon shows per month in January to March 2020. Bindlestiff will be open for families & children to watch and be involved in a puppetry-infused afternoon show tailored just for them.

Kids will be encouraged to pick up a puppet & join along in the show!

Phase 3 will be a series of puppetry workshops for children that Ramon will lead on four consecutive Saturday afternoons in April/May.

Participants will work together to learn to tell stories with a variety of different modern puppetry styles.

Kids will make their own puppets that they can take home after the final show!

On the fourth and final workshop, everyone in the barangay is invited to watch a ticketed show based on the stories that the participants themselves will write and perform with puppets.

Volunteers at every step are welcome to get involved!
