OKAY BA TAYO? A Health Care Reform Awareness and Bindlestiff Artist Medical Relief Fundraiser

Flyer by OMZ

Hello, Bindlestiff Family and Friends! Thank you for staying tuned to our small, San Francisco black box theater. Next on the horizon is a special event, close to our hearts. Bindlestiff Studio is raising funds to support our beloved Resident Noir and House Manager, Ed Mabasa. Ed was recently hospitalized, as his medical supply dwindled in shelter. We’ve pledged to help cover some of the mounting costs of his recovery, as well as raise awareness for much needed Health Care Reform. We, at Bindlestiff know Our Darkling is fond of fashioning himself a loner, however Ed is very much OUR loner and a solid part of this powerful and compassionate community.

We invite you to join us on August 1st, 7PM PST for a fundraiser drive, Bindlestiff style. Featuring stand up comedy from Kevin Camia and Kat Evasco, sketch comedy from Granny Cart Gangstas, Geek Show and Queer as Fuck, a puppet show by Ramon Abad, a Forbidden Futures sneak peek, musical presentations by Rachel Lastimosa and Golda Supernova,  and a special U-Jam session with Liza Erpelo, all hosted by Bindlestiff Legend, Samson Manalo.

anti terror art show

Dear Community,

On Friday, July 24th Malaya Movement San Francisco will be hosting a virtual art show featuring some incredible visual artists from throughout the Bay Area. The Anti Terror Law Virtual Art Show examines the violent, anti-democratic, and fascistic political reality that is permeating in the Philippines under the Rodrigo Duterte regime.

With the recent passing of Duterte's Anti Terror Law, a widely condemned law that literally criminalizes all forms of political dissent, these artists have developed pieces that expose and highlight the oppression by the Philippines government, but also the peoples tenacious spirit to resist tyranny and fight for genuine democracy.

Since becoming president in 2016, the Duterte regime has killed roughly 30,000 (mostly poor) people in its war on drugs. Hundreds more have also been killed, disappeared, imprisoned or harassed by state security forces for organizing labor struggles, fighting for indigenous rights, protecting the environment, and empowering women, LGBTQ+ people, and other marginalized sectors of Philippine society.

Filipinx artists in the US/Bay Area are speaking out to bring light to this issue and educate the broader community in the US on how we are connected to these issues in the Philippines and how we can take action to demand accountability, change, and justice.

Please join us on Friday, July 24, 6-8 pm for our Anti Terror Law Virtual Art Show! This event is free to the public so please bring a friend or many friends, get your favorite snack and drink, and enjoy the show.

This is also a build-up event for the People's State of the Nation or SONA rally on Monday, July 27th.

liwanag submission

Liwanag Workshops

SOMA Pilipinas and Kearny Street Workshop are looking for artist submissions for the groundbreaking Pilipinx arts journal, Liwanag. The deadline has been extended to 8/23/20.

Following the re-issue of the seminal 1975 Filipino American arts anthology, Liwanag, SOMA Pilipinas is proud to announce a call for submissions for the newest entry into this series, Liwanag 3! As the original Liwanag, and the 1993 issue, Liwanag 2, amplified the voices of local, Bay Area Filipino American artists of those time periods, they’re bringing Liwanag back to showcase and reflect upon the evolution of the Pilipinx identity of today.

To submit and read the updated guidelines and editorial notes go to: https://www.somapilipinas.org/liwanag/submissions

You can purchase “LIWANAG: Literary and Graphic Expressions by Filipinos in America” Special Commemorative Reissue at https://www.arkipelagobooks.com/products/liwanag-literary-and-graphic-expressions-by-filipinos-in-america

Mabuhay Health Center Art Submission & Raffle

The Mabuhay Health Center invites students, families, and SoMA community members to participate in an art showcase: Kulay Ng Pag-Asa, or Color of Hope. Art has consistently been a pivotal part of the way communities express themselves—spanning barriers of time, language, and culture. Oftentimes a photograph, a painting, or even poetry can speak volumes about your feelings when words fail. Here at the Mabuhay Health Center we recognize art’s capacity to not only elevate the voices of the community, but also heal those who create and observe it. In decades of community organizing, art has remained powerful because of its ability to both shape and be shaped by the social conditions that surround us.

Today, the SoMA community rallies together in the midst of both the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement to support and protect each one of its members. It’s during pivotal historical moments like these that we see the community as a unit become more important than ever. In spite of the surrounding uncertainty and fear, we want to create a safe space for the youth, families, and our lolos and lolas  to express their feelings and tell stories of their life or imagination.

All submissions are due on  August 3, 2020 at 11:59pm and will be showcased in SoMa’s virtual pistahan parade on August 8 and 9.
