Horror Playwriting with Christina Ying

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Students will engage in a 6-week intensive writing workshop to learn the fundamental elements of creating a horror stage play. Students will discover how core concepts of character, structure, plot, theme, and tone interact with the horror genre. The workshop will also explore the integration of American and Filipino cultural folklore into the horror genre. Students are expected to complete a 10-12 page one act that will be performed for a reading.

CLASS STRUCTURE: Classes will be taught through Zoom. With lectures, weekly assignments, in-class readings, and one on one consultation, students will grasp the fundamental concept of scene structure, action, events, voice, and dialogue. Writing assignments are arranged to mirror a writer’s creative process culminating in completing a 10- 12 page script that will be read on stage at Bindlestiff Studio.
