FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The FOB Show: Foblematic showing Feb 21, 22, 28 & 29

San Francisco — Jan 23, 2020 — After fifteen years, the show from between two shores is coming home. This February The FOB Show will once again grace the stage, blending traditional theater, improv, shadow puppetry, movement, and video multimedia to tell entirely new stories of the immigrant experience, seen through the Filipino lens. The production is set to run from Feb 20th through the 29th (Thursday through Saturday nights at 8:00pm), with Preview night on the 15th and a special Saturday Matinee on the 29th at 3:00pm.

Taken from the acronym for “Fresh Off the Boat” — a term used to derogatorily refer to new immigrants (most often used by second- and third-generation immigrants in their own communities) — The FOB Show was conceived in 2004 by Dino Ignacio and Ryan Morales in the basement of the original Bindlestiff Studio. Themselves first-generation immigrants from Manila, they created the show as a way to upend the stereotypes and clichés surrounding not just Filipino transplants, but all who have had to leave their homes and loved ones to seek better futures in foreign lands.

The FOB Show returns at a crucial point in modern American history. With anti-immigrant sentiment on a perilous rise,  it is important now more than ever for us all to remember that — save for a small few — every person living in America has an immigrant to thank, somewhere in their family tree. In a time where too much focus is being put on the things that divide us, The FOB Show celebrates what unites us, whether our forebears touched down in SFO or on Plymouth Rock.

About the Writer / Director
The FOB Show is a troupe-based production, written, directed, and performed by the group and owing itself to no single individual. As it is for so many other immigrants, The FOB Show’s strength and success is thanks entirely to the community and people that support it, both within and without.

About Bindlestiff Studio
Originally opened in 1989, Bindlestiff Studio is the only community-based performing arts venue in the nation dedicated to showcasing emerging Filipino American and Pilipino artists. Bindlestiff Studio provides the often under-served Filipino American community access to diverse offerings in theatrical productions, music and film festivals, workshops in directing, production, acting, stand-up comedy, and writing, as well as youth and senior theater arts education.
