Casts

Give Them the Bird by Dom Refuerzo

On a summer afternoon in the park, Cameron tries to clear the air with Andy. At the same time, Robin and Jay rain on their parade with a hilariously irreverent prank. Witness the heartfelt absurdity as shit hits the fan (in more ways than one)!

The Assistant by Frank Bella Chavez

In the not too distant future... Francesca, a struggling writer, purchases an AI assistant, ALYSSA, to help edit their online content so they can focus on their latest play. However, ALYSSA is more than what she seems and soon wants a writing career of her own.

Ask Auntie Aurelia Anything by Amy L. Pabalan

A podcaster and her younger sisters clash over “controversial” content in “Ask Auntie Aurelia Anything.”

Finding Time by Allen Mark Aranas

Ann joins a young Raphael on a shopping trip for pandesal ingredients in hopes to write stories based on his past. But as the scenes shift and memory gets fickle, reality starts to set in, crooning about the preciousness of time spent together in both the past and present.

Steal My Sunshine by Manny Cabrera

A sunrise sheds new light on a day. Well maybe what Sam wants to say to Paolo will shed a new dynamic to their budding relationship.

Shakespeare in Babak by Jordan Idolyantes Guingao

In the aftermath of the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during WW2, a delusional director from Manila’s upper-crust ventures deep into the war torn Philippine Province to put on a production of William Shakespeares’ ‘Julius Caesar.’ Despite local bewilderment and the threat of a Japanese re-invasion, his show will go on, no matter the cost.

Bios

Carlie Algas (Jay in Give Them the Bird)
Well, I went today
Maybe I will go again tomorrow
Yeah yeah, well, the music there
Well, it was hauntingly familiar
Well, I see you doing what I try to do for me
With the words from a poet and a voice from a choir
And a melody, and nothing else mattered

Just like the white winged dove
Sings a song, sounds like she's singing
I said ooh, baby, ooh, said ooh
Just like the white winged dove
Sings a song, sounds like she's singing
I said ooh, baby, ooh, said ooh

Aureen Almario (Co-Producer)
Aureen Almario (She/Her) began her Bindlestiff journey 20 years ago with Stories High. As the artistic director of Bindlestiff Studio she makes sure Stories High continues every year to create a platform for all levels of aspiring theater creatives. She is grateful for the facilitators, Christina, Li-Leng and Michelle for sharing their knowledge and taking such great care of the participants. To the Bindlestiff creative team: Oli, Ed, D, Julie, Conrad, Joe & Lo, she would like to thank them for their consistent support. Last, but not least, to Dave & Kidlat, thanks for your love and patience .

Allen Mark Aranas (Writer of Finding Time, and Antonio in Shakespeare in Babak)
Allen Mark (He/Him) is a Bay Area born and raised 2nd gen Filipino-American writer, performer, podcaster, gamer, soft boy, and friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Using the past year to rediscover his creative voice after being absolutely crushed by capitalism, he feels incredibly thankful and lucky to make his Bindlestiff debut as a playwriter and actor to continue cultivating his passion for the arts. You can usually find him rolling for initiative, dissecting K-pop song arrangements, or dissociating mid-conversation.

Mayo Arbues (Cameron in Give Them the Bird, Francine in Ask Auntie Aurelia Anything)
Mayo Arbues (He/They) is a Bay Area based creative and student working on a B.A. in Theatre Arts at DVC. They’ve worked on and offstage for YMTC, Bindlestiff Studio, and Shotgun Players. You can keep up with their upcoming projects on instagram @mayo.arbues

Alex "Coveralls" Arguelles (Lolo in Finding Time)
Alex is a little troll that hides under the bridge that connects the Land of Creativity and the Isle of Passion. You may remember the Bridge of Enchantment as it was the famous grounds of the Battle of Schloon's and Kippel, 45 dials ago. Many speculate that Alex is a lost soldier, mourning his friends who were cast to the River of Time (that's the river that flows under the bridge). Others believe he is the forgotten King of the Nomandy Flame.

He is a recent graduate of Pitzer College and has a bachelor's degree in Cognitive Science.

When he is not posing riddles to bridge-goers, he is playing music around town. Don't ask him what kind of music he plays! He will talk for many hours.

Li-Leng Au (Facilitator, Acting Workshop)
Li-Leng Au studied acting in London at the Rose Buford School of Speech and Drama and then Physical Theatre at LISPA (London International School of Performing Arts). She has worked internationally as an actor in the UK, Australia, Poland and USA. Her career has seen her working on stage, screen, radio and corporate training. Career highlights have included: originating cast of multi-award winning “My Neighbour Totoro” for the Royal Shakespeare Company; “Arquiem” a pyrotechnic promenade physical theatre show on tour and at the National Theatre (London); “Top Girls” at The Melbourne Theatre Company; “Walk Me!” a devised project for her Sydney based theatre company & “Great Expectations” at the San Jose Stage. She is delighted to be teaching the Bindlestiff acting workshop this year.

Clarisse Bautista (Co-Director for Finding Time, and Maria in Shakespeare in Babak)
Clarisse (She/Her) is a Filipina-American actress born and raised in the Bay Area who began pursuing acting in 2020 right before the pandemic. She took classes in the Meisner technique, TV/Film acting, improv, and voiceover and acted in indie short films, student films, staged readings, and theatre. She is excited to make her directorial debut with her amazing co-direk, Tracy Keith Legacion, and to return to the stage to act in another Stories High. Clarisse would like to thank her partner, friends, and family for their patience and support, and SHXXIV casts and crew for all their hard work and dedication. She gives a special shout out of gratitude to her co-direk, Finding Time cast/writer, Shakespeare in Babak cast/direk/writer, & LO.

Randy Bautista (Pugoy in Shakespeare in Babak)
Randy (He/Him) had such a great time doing Stories High last year he decided to go for another round! Pursuing acting professionally in LA for 10 years, including appearances on NBC's Superstore and Nickelodeon's Sam & Cat, Randy went on a 5-year hiatus before rekindling his love of the acting craft with Stories High XXIII playing the lead in Once Upon a Time in Tondo by Jordan Idolyantes Guingao. He's excited to close another Stories High playing another character in the Jordan-verse, hoping that his mom above won't be too embarrassed knowing what Jordan and Shakespeare in Babak's directors Kyle & Kat are having him do in front of you all.

Angela Busgano (Catherine in Ask Auntie Aurelia Anything)
This is Angela’s (She/Her) first production with Bindlestiff and she couldn’t be more thankful to take part in this vibrant community! Angela has only recently returned to performing after a 5-year hiatus. When she’s not in the theater she is practicing her Filipino arnis, dabbling in other musical endeavors, and forcing her cat to exercise. She hopes you can find something that resonates with you in this year’s show. Thanks for your support!

Manny Cabrera (Writer of Steal My Sunshine)
I am one of those melodramatic fools...neurotic to the bone, no doubt about it.

Joe Cascasan (Co-Producer)

I bomb atomically, Socrates' philosophies and hypotheses
Can't define how I be droppin' these mockeries
Lyrically perform armed robbery
Flee with the lottery, possibly they spotted me
Battle-scarred Shogun, explosion when my pen hits tremendous
Ultra-violet shine blind forensics
I inspect view through the future see millennium
Killa Beez sold fifty gold, sixty platinum
Shackling the masses with drastic rap tactics
Graphic displays melt the steel like blacksmiths
Black Wu jackets, Queen Beez ease the guns in
Rumble with patrolmen, tear gas laced the function
Heads by the score take flight, incite a war
Chicks hit the floor, diehard fans demand more
Behold the bold soldier, control the globe slowly
Proceeds to blow, swingin' swords like Shinobi
Stomp grounds and pound footprints in solid rock
Wu got it locked, performin' live on your hottest block

She’s honored, overjoyed, and filled with gratitude to have been gifted the opportunity to work, play, learn, grow, and co-create in this talent-filled company, and to have been absorbed into what is not only a team or community but also a supportive, encouraging, most-welcoming family. This production is part of a return to in-person theatre for Delaney after a few years of performances primarily in live but virtual spaces, a return to the Bay Area, her place of birth, after different chapters different places, and a return to her Self and her (he)art. A lifelong mover, maker, and paradigm shifter, having the privilege to be brown, to be queer, to be neurodivergent, and a gazillion other things, not only off stage, but now also on stage (and not the only one backstage), comes with indescribable feelings. Delaney thanks you for being part of the ride, and extends deep gratitude and big love to everyone who has enabled or empowered her on this so-far multi-decade adventure of becoming her, including those unable to be part of this audience. Saving the best seats for you in spirit<3
