The Ghost Within: An Introduction to Writing Horror Plays

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Students will engage in a 3-week intensive writing workshop, where they will learn the fundamental elements of creating a horror stage play. Students will discover how core concepts of character, structure, plot, theme, and tone interact with the horror genre. The workshop will also explore the integration of American and Filipino cultural folklore into the horror genre. Students are expected to complete a 10-page one act that will be read on stage. 

CLASS STRUCTURE:

With lecture, weekly assignments, in-class readings, and one on one consultation students will grasp the fundamental concept of scene structure, action, events, voice, and dialogue. Writing assignments are arranged to mirror a writer’s creative process culminating in the successful completion of a ten-page script that will be read on stage at Bindlestiff Studio.

RATES:

Each student will be charged sliding scale $50 - $100. Limited spots.

About Christina Ying

Christina is a resident playwright and workshop facilitator with Bindlestiff studio. She earned her MFA at Northwestern University in Writing for the Screen and Stage and was also a fellow with the Sewanee Writers Conference and the Kenyon Playwrights Conference. Christina made her playwriting debut at Bindlestiff Studio with her monologue, The Word of Oprah in 2010. In addition to teaching for the Stories High workshop series and the inaugural Love Edition playwriting workshop, she’s also written for the Granny Cart Gangstas and the Amok play reading festival. Her full-length play and graduate thesis, There’s the Moon and Then There’s You world premiered at Bindlestiff Studio on May 30, 2015. Christina will debut a snippet of her full length work in progress, “In Real Life,” at the Bindlestiff Stories High Showcase in September, 2019.
